If you are from New Jersey then you understand the appeal of this savory staple and have probably engaged in an argument or ten whether it’s Taylor Ham or Pork Roll. If you’re not from NJ, we’re sorry you had to go without all your life. The NJ way to order is with egg and cheese on a roll aka PEC but if you really want to savor all of its piggy deliciousness, I personally recommend ordering without the egg (ie naked) on a roll.
SLATER'S DELI– Leonardo. It’s a 15 min drive but worth it for their wildly generous portion of meat when you order it naked.
HIGHLANDS CAFE – We definitely recommend getting this one on a roll which they toast on the giant griddle so the bread soaks up all the savory juices that help make this sandwich so dreamy.
GEMS BAGELS HIGHLANDS when bagels are part of your name, you get your sandwich on one! Though I have gotten mine with cheese on a roll and it was superb.
SISSY'S AT THE HARBOR in Atlantic Highlands can hold their own when it comes to making an excellent pork roll sandwich (and everything else breakfast wise!). Plus it's right on the marina so you get breakfast with a side of bay views.
JOHNNYS PORK ROLL TRUCK -parked at the north end of the Asbury Park Boardwalk. The owner is as salty as the pork and will definitely make fun of you for ordering your sandwich plain but their generous stack and perfectly crisped edges are worth the shame and the drive.
